About Us

Originally named the Science Learning Centre North East, the centre was built in 2005 and owned by Durham University.

The building was re-named The Sjøvoll Centre on February 2014 in honour of Joan Sjøvoll, headteacher at Framwellgate School Durham, who died in January 2013. As an inspirational individual, Joan led the school for 12 years and was the driving force behind the creation of this centre which reflected her belief in science education. Joan worked tirelessly, both at Framwellgate School Durham, and in the wider educational world, to promote creativity, innovation and enquiry. This centre, and all that happens within it, is testament to her vision, drive and commitment to ensuring that young people are given opportunities to become all that they can be.

At present, the building is primarily used as a conference and events centre with current permanent rentals within the centre being Investing in Children and County Durham Sport.
